Cyberattacks are no longer rare, and they’re not just a technical issue for IT teams to manage. For not-for-profits and community organisations, they are high-stakes trust and reputation events, often involving sensitive information about the people you serve.
But how do you communicate when your organisation is under attack and the full picture isn’t yet clear?
In this practical, values-led session we’ll delve into what a cyber incident can look like and the role effective communications can play – from early warning signs, to media queries, and the potential exposure of personal data.
You’ll learn:
- Why cyberattacks are communications crises
- What to say when information is incomplete
- How to balance transparency with risk
- How to maintain trust with key audiences
- Practical steps you can take to prepare now
Designed for people working in not-for-profit communications, you’ll gain practical tools and greater confidence to respond if the worst happens.
We are excited to have independent communications consultant Mary Baines as our presenter.
Mary has experience across the public and not-for-profit sectors. She has worked in strategic leadership and hands-on roles spanning crisis response, stakeholder engagement, and reputation management, with international experience in New Zealand, the UK, and Asia-Pacific.
In 2021, Mary contributed to the Ministry of Health’s response to the Waikato DHB cyberattack, sparking a strong focus on cyber crisis communications. She holds a Master of Science in Strategic Communication (with Distinction), and now supports purpose-driven organisations to strengthen their preparedness and response to cyber risks.
For out of towners or those who can’t make it on the day, this workshop will be recorded and shared on our website after the event.
This is a Community Comms Collective workshop for not-for-profits and collective volunteers hosted by Volunteer Wellington and supported by JacksonStone & Partners. We are grateful for their support and for our speaker giving her time and talent pro bono.
